General information about the course
The following information pertains to all presentations of the course. For the particular details regarding its presentation at your institution, click on its name here.
Course title: Managing Organizational Conflict
Instructor: Daniel Dana, Ph.D.
Summary
The centerpiece of this course is a classroom simulation that serves as a behavioral laboratory for developing practical skills to prevent and manage everyday workplace (and personal) conflict, and for learning effective tools for resolving disputes. Each student will be a working member of the General Case Study Company (GCSC). A conceptual basis for resulting applied skills will be achieved through advance readings, lecture, video, discussion, and demonstrations by the instructor, as well as through participation in the Manager-as-Mediator Seminar. An optimum blend of theory and practical skills results.
Course objectives
- To develop conceptual understanding of the psychological and behavioral dynamics of interpersonal, intergroup, and systemic conflict in an organizational context.
- To develop practical skills and acquire effective tools for resolving such conflicts both as a principal party (one who is personally involved in dispute) and as a third party (one who mediates conflict between others).
- To develop ability to diagnose and redesign dispute resolution systems.
- To develop understanding of the strategic management of conflict as a corrosive process, as performed by senior executives or human resource professionals.
