How to participate in text (chat) conferences

Conferences and forums that are conducted as text discussions resemble face-to-face group meetings, except participants cannot see when others are beginning to speak. Consequently, there may be several "threads" of discussion happening simultaneously. (What is the difference between a conference and a forum?)

To participate effectively, please use these guidelines:
  1. When responding to an individual's previous comment, type at the beginning of your contribution the name of the person whose comment you are responding to. e.g., "Pat, I think one answer to your question is . . . "
  2. When the number of active participants exceeds about ten, MTI's facilitator may act as "gatekeeper" to limit the number of simultaneous threads. When this occurs, participants are asked to use the "Gatekeeper Rules" below.

Gatekeeper Rules

  1. When you wish to ask a question or to comment, type "HAND" to indicate that you are "raising your hand." Participants' questions will be taken in turn.
  2. MTIs facilitator will signal you that it is your turn by typing your name with a question mark (?) following it, e.g., Chicago Sue?
  3. You may then ask your question. To speed up the discussion, please have your question/comment already typed so you can simply hit your Enter key.

Proceed to the conference room
