Workshop:
From Ecuador to Harvard:
Former President Jamil Mahuad's Leadership Journey
Target Audience:
For consultants, mediators, coaches, and organizational leaders who want to hear from a former head of state about the power of using strong emotions effectively in negotiating and leading.
About this Workshop:
As president of Ecuador, Mr. Jamil Mahuad signed in 1998 a Peace Treaty with neighbor country Peru's President Alberto Fujimori. Reflecting on this event, President Clinton stated "you have solved the longest source of armed conflict in the Western Hemisphere." Both South-American Presidents were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition for their achievement. After a military revolt forced him out of power in 2000, President Mahuad accepted to become part of Harvard University, where he co-founded the Harvard International Negotiation Initiative at Harvard Law School.
Mr. Mahuad has a "practitioner's perspective" like few others.
A contributing author of Beyond Reason: Using Emotions as You Negotiate, Mr. Mahuad's unique approach is to show how to prepare rationally and emotionally for crucial negotiations and mediations by using seminal theories on the field from such works as Getting to Yes while bringing these skills to life by sharing powerful stories from his presidency.
In this workshop, Mr. Mahuad will help participants to:
- Understand the skills and models that most helped him as he led the "Peace Process" between Peru and Ecuador
- Learn the rich story of his journey as a leader, mediator and negotiator
- Develop a better understanding of how to harness strong emotions to get to the best outcome
